Understanding the Business Name Registration Process:
If you carry on business under a name other than your personal name only, you must register a sole proprietorship.
Similarly, a partnership must also register its business name under the Ontario Business Names Act.
You may also file applications for Employers Health Tax and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
OnCorp’s easy-to-follow registration process only requires a few steps:
- Click on the order icon above and Accept Terms & Conditions on the next page.
- Complete the payment process. Make note of your user ID and password.
- Select Start a New Registration or Start a New Renewal.
- Select the appropriate registration type
(Sole Proprietorship
or Partnership) and complete the form that follows.
- Save and validate your data; then print a draft copy.
- Submit the filing. Your Master Business Licence will be returned in a few minutes.
Renewals are mailed back by the Ministry of Government Services.

Did you know
* If the name of your sole proprietorship is your personal name only, you do not need to register it.
However, if you add another word or if you carry on business under another name, you must register that business name.
* Business name registrations are only valid for 5 years. It is the responsibility of the registrant to renew the registration.
* Although a name search is not mandatory for business name registrations, it is highly recommended that you prescreen your proposed name.
* A business name registration cannot have a legal element in its name.
* Registering your business name does not grant you exclusive use of that name. You may wish to seek legal counsel about incorporation or trademark registration.
